Weight Watchers Pluspoints

Weight Watchers has made some important changes in a new plan called the PointsPlus program. It’s the first time they have over hauled their program since they began fifty plus years ago. With the PointsPlus plan members will have a lower point count on protein and whole grains. Most fruits and vegetables will be counted as free foods. This is good news for Weight Watchers members. They will be allowed more protein and have more free foods to choose from.

Introducing the new PointsPlus program that changes the point system on some foods.
Dietitian Marie Spano said, “Weight Watchers is taking into account the principle that our body spends more energy processing protein and fiber whereas we spend little energy on carbs and fat.” As a result, that means a calorie consumed really isn’t always a calorie in the human body. High starch foods such as peas, corn and potatoes have higher PointsPlus values. One cup of corn has a 4 PointsPlus and corn on the cob has 2 PointsPlus. A baked potato with veggies and cheese will cost you 11 PointsPlus. A half cup mashed potatoes will only cost you 2 PointsPlus. Most fruits and vegetables do not have to be counted at all, which is a big plus for hungry folks. A lot of changes have been made in the science of
nutrition since Weight Watchers first opened it’s doors fifty-plus years ago. The time had come for Weight Watchers to overhaul it’s diet system. In the new program protein is given lower points, taking into consideration that lean protein helps dieters feel full longer than simple carbs, Therefore, members are more satisfied with less calories. One of the problems, Spano said she saw on the old program was that people would eat their points in processed carbs to stay within the limits and then would be hungry and overeat. Members would often skip a banana which counted as 2 points, to have a 100 calorie snack pack which also counted as 2 points. She said the new plan is more balanced with lower points for protein, and most healthy vegetables and fruits are free. This means everyone can eat their fill of the veggies and fruits which are free, and still have enough points for lean protein and whole wheat. For a 270 PointsPlus breakfast you could have: one poached egg, one slice of light whole wheat with a pat of light butter and 3 ounces of Canadian bacon. The bacon and egg breakfast has a 6 PointsPlus value because it’s higher in protein and fiber.
