Are you a women who finds gynecological exams traumatic? If you are, you’re not alone. Many women dread the idea of a doctor touching the genitals, breasts and rectum. Some are very anxious and some women even pass out. Many women avoid gynecological exams altogether, and problems go undetected.
If you dread going to the gynecologist, there are some things that can help you get through the ordeal. Tess Langly, M.D., medical director of the Women’s Center in Colorado says, Schedule your appointment right after your period so you wont feel pain when the doctor examines your breast, and empty your
bladder before the exam. It makes it easier for the doctor to feel your uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. You can keep your shoes on if you like. the heels will allow you to grip the heel rests better. If you are uneasy, tell your doctor. If he or she knows you are uncomfortable, he or she will do their best to be more reassuring than usual. Remember to breath. The speculum is a devise that opens the vagina to allow the doctor to examine it and
get a tissue sample. Tense pelvic muscles makes it more difficult, if not impossible. This drags out the examination, so breath deeply and relax your muscles. Put your hand on your stomach muscles, when you realize how tight they are, you are able to relax.Don’t focus on the exam. That only makes it worse says, Dr. Langly. Try to imagine something you enjoy or something you are looking forward to with enjoyment. If it hurts, say so. She may have some suggestions to make it better. Telling her how you feel also provides her with information that might give her information about your state of health.
