Take notes because you will forget many details unless recorded. Use prompters like your memories, stories you’ve been told, family photos, favorite family songs, recipes and the like to spark reminiscences. Great grandparents and great aunts and uncles are founts of information. Make time to listen to all their memories and any funny stories are a plus. Tell the story of as many generations as possible. Include letters, deeds, marriage licenses, birth certificates, and so on if you have access to them. Collect pictures of family members of all generations.
Now you have your stories and pictures. It’s time to sit down and write. You can start with the oldest generation, or youngest and look back on generations past. It’s your choice, and don’t worry about it being best seller. You are writing the history of your family for the family. If others want to read it, so be it. But that’s not your concern.
